Amazon.co.uk ReviewGiven that IResident Evil/I is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game which was itself highly derivative (especially of George A Romero and James Cameron films), it's probably unfair to complain that it hasn't got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. In the early 1980s, Italian schlock films such as IZombie Flesh Eaters/I and IZombie Creeping Flesh/I tried to cram in as many moments restaged from American originals as possible, strung together by silly characters wandering between monster attacks. This is a much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the same gambit. p As amnesiac Milla Jovovich remembers amazing kung fu skills and anti-globalist Eric Mabius mutters about evil corporations, a gang of clichéd soldiers with nary a distinguishing feature between them (except for Michelle Rodriguez as a secondary tough chick) are trapped in an underground scientific compound at the mercy of a tyrannical computer--which manifests as a smug little-girl-o-gram--fending off flesh-eating zombies (though gore fans will be disappointed by the film's need to stay within the limits of the 15 certificate) and CGI mutants, not to mention the ever-popular zombie dogs. It's tolerably action-packed, but zips past its borrowings (IAliens/I, ICube/I, IDeep Blue Sea/I) without adding anything that future schlock pictures will want to imitate. p BOn the DVD/B: IResident Evil/I on disc has the expected trailers, both teaser and theatrical; a half-hour making-of; zombie make-up tests; featurettes on music (with Marilyn Manson), production design and costume. A lively commentary track features Anderson, Jovovich, Rodriguez and producer/zombie Jeremy Bolt--Jovovich upbraids Anderson for talking about different gradings of film stock over her nude scene and everyone else talks about how much she hurt them by punching them out during action sequences. Anderson mentions an alternate commentary track with visual effects designer Richard Yuricich, but it isn't included. --IKim Newman/I

I liked it! :-)Just to make it clear, i have never played the Resident Evil games so I have no idea whether the film compares well to actual game version of it.
br /But generally, I thought the film was pretty amazing. I didn't really understand the beginning of the film so, intrigued, I carried on watching to see if it explains it more, which it did and then it continued into a very good zombie, horror film!
br /I thought Michelle Rodriguez was a fab actress in this movie; playing the agent, (I think her character was more of the main star). I think some of the things that she said half way through the film made me giggle a bit, but still, the whole film is quite scary in some places and the setting that it is in has created a well worth watching film.
br /This has made me rent out the 2 other Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich cause I want to see what happens next! :-)

The importance of being Milla JovovichIn a nutshell: after I watching this movie I thought 'well, that is one of the best and most entertaining movies I ever saw'.
br /
br /To be honest, I neither know the game nor am I a zombie movie fan at all. Now that surely doesn't make me the prime clientele of this production, right. :)
br /
br /But this movie caught me from the very start. Milla's character wakes up in a unknown room and doesn't remember anything. Only a few small bits of memories appear (which towards the end of the movie add up and reveal the whole picture of what's going). She joins a group of heavily armed soldiers, and they end up in a fight with mutated people and other creatures and have to escape the building complex before it is shut down forever.
br /
br /And those two parts - 1. journey into the unknown and 2. run for life and against time - I found totally thrilling and, well, 'matrix'-like (speaking only of Matrix I of course). When the actors enter the building all seems so clean and sterile, but then it quickly get all pretty dirty and contaminated ...
br /
br /The actors (feat. Michelle Rodriguez) are very conving, too. I thought that especially the quiet scenes of the movie are atmospheric.
br /
br /Like I said, I don't know what the game is like and will probably never know. My background on zombie movies is pretty thin, so I don't have much comparison. Nevertheless this movie rocked my world, and even knowing the outcome, I watched it a few times more afterwards.
br /
br /So, if you don't have high expectations from the game and just want to see a thrilling movie - that may also get quite messy, then this might be to your liking.
br /
br /P.S: The follow-up Resident Evil II was acceptable, being more monumental and having more combat action.

Pretty decent filmResident Evil is well known in gaming, one of the best series of games out there. Usually films made for big games don't usually work but it was actually pretty decent. Not the best film I've seen but it definitely kept my eyes glued to the screen. Some of the acting was rather dire, but I loved Milla Jovavich's acting and Michelle Rodriguez's facial expressions, even if the latter was rather cheesy. That's what I liked about it though. It was able to mix dark humour into the film (such as when Milla killed the zombiefied dogs) as well as a scary atmosphere. Some parts, such as the infamous flesh-cutting laser beam scene had me sat there with my hands to my face dreading the next few seconds. Some parts of the film was slow in places but the action-packed scenes made up for it. The storyline was a tad confusing but I was able to get the gist of it. All in all, a good film that didn't quite deserve 5 stars from me but did nearly make it.

COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTERRESIDENT EVIL has a lot of missed oportunities - unfortunately. The atmosphere is about right, the acting quite decent, but the certain something's missing, and that is present through the entire film. Gore hogs will certainly NOT be satisfied - stick to Fulci's or Romero's work and take a pass on this. Pity, could have been a LOT better.
