Why I have bought THIS drive!
A few years ago i bought a laptop from Curry's at a great price, its only downside was its tiny hard drive (60gb), Over the past few years it has been running hot even with only a few apps open, playing a video makes it think about taking off into orbit. On this basis I'm not hopeful for the length of life of its internal hard drive.

To this end i wanted a RELIABLE external hard drive.
My Aims
A very reliable, external hard drive with 200gb-500gb storage, roughly costing £50-£60. After spending hours searching the net this is the one i have chosen.

Reasons why Ive not chosen other drives;

1) Although other drives are cheaper, and you get more space look at the number of bad reviews where they have just gone *click* and ceased to work, both money and potentially data lost. To me the data is more important, so even a refund or replacement from amazon would not satisfy me, It wont get back those holiday and Christmas photos and videos.
-seriously look at every other external HD on amazon, and look at and read the number of reviews giving just 1 star. The only bad review (at writing this) of this drive is a negative on amazon, not Fujitsu.

2) Maxtor are now Seagate owned, and Seagate put out their budget models under maxtor. Or so my web searching would suggest, So if you wouldn't buy Seagate, Id suggest you definitely don't get a Maxtor

3)Western Digital, are cheap and have many sales but have no UK support so their 5 year guarantee over Fujitsu's meager 1 year guarantee may not be such a benefit. They guarantee their HD wont fail within 5 years or your money back- Look at the number of 1 star reviews! Ive heard amazon replace with no problem but you data is still gone.
As a side note early WD My Passport HD's actually contained Fujitsu HDs, Id speculate this was perhaps because they (Fujitsu) were considered reliable by their competitor.

(some of above info taken from notebook reviews forum)

4) One of my friends recently bought a WD 500gb MyBook Essential, after a few days use i met up with him and on touching the side of the device although he had been doing no file transfers, was noticeable very warm or hot to touch, to my understanding one factor that plays a significant roll in the HDs life span is heat buildup (other than of course dousing it in coffee, or flicking it off your desk

About the Fujitsu Handydrive III I now own

1) It runs at a lower speed to other external HDs, So far this has not been in any way problem. Infact i believe logically with its components not being pushed nearer to their operational limits this lower speed will increase the products life (this is only my own logic drawn opinion though)

2) It runs fine from my laptop via a single cable for combined power and data transfer, AND incase this single cable couldn't power it, A separate USB power cable was included, admittedly if needed this would block 2 usb ports on your PC/Laptop but it means you dont have to get the cable separately as some WD buyers do, and it is a true travel drive, (from my research some power cables for travel drives of other brands require a mains socket)

3) (Most important to me at this stage) After doing alot of transfer it is only just noticeably different in temperature to the wood of my desk, it is also quite silent.

4) My laptop shows the 300gb drive as having 279gb total space available, All external drives loose some space. But i realised, I'm unlikely to fill even this, Lots and lots of space sounds like good value, but how much will you actually need? For me saving £20 and getting 200gb more, but the likelihood of loosing it all being higher was not worth while?

5) Its body feels robust and is a tough plastic that i cant bend with my hands. It comes with a leather/mock leather travel case, that i feel will save it from many minor shocks or jolts.

Ive bought it because to me with my needs it seems the best product on the market currently

If it dies Ill be back to say how and how long it lived for, I'm hoping i wont be back!

Faulty from Amazon
Arrived next day but when opened the first thing that fell out was a return slip and receipt from another customer! Needless to say the drive didn't work and is now on it's way back, which is a shame as I really needed it today and will now have to wait for a hopefully better replacment. The 1 Star is for Amazon in this case and not the product, which I'm still going to try. I will review again in a few weeks after I have used the drive. Come on Amazon, I expected better than this and feel let down by your Quality Control procedures.

Comes With It's Own Carry Case
Great piece of kit. Bought this to primarily back-up all my photo and mp3 files. Chose Fujitsu for quality (hopfully). Just plugged in a USB cable then copied and pasted all my stuff. Comes with it's own branded carry case. Works fine with my own USB cable.

Worked straight out of the box
Plugged and played! Great wee carrying case. Works on one USB cable powered from the desktop or laptop.

Caution, I did have a problem one time when I plugged it in, it just sat there and made a tick, not recognised on computer etc.

I had used another USB cable and not the one supplied with it, I assume it was a cheap one which caused too much supply voltage drop. So make sure you use only the lead that comes with it.

Very good drive
I bought this drive without reading any reviews but it works like a dream and unlike some of my previous drives it runs really cool. WOrks off 1 USB port where my old WD drive needed two USB ports. Would definitely buy another Fujitsu.
