Editorial reviews
Amazon.co.uk ReviewAn adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name,
Stardust brings a strong cast together for an enjoyable family feast, with plenty to enjoy.
Stardust mixes in romance and adventure, all in a fantasy movie guise, as it follows Tristan on his quest to retrieve a fallen star for the beautiful Victoria. Only it soon becomes clear that there’s a lot more going on as Tristan makes his journey (not least a companion more diverting than the aforementioned Victoria). Michelle Pfeiffer, for instance, returns to high profile movie making (after quite a break) in the role of the evil witch, while there’s space too for Robert De Niro’s pirate and an odd cameo from Ricky Gervais.
Seemingly one of a wealth of family films that made it out of the blocks off the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Stardust doesn’t quite hit those heights, but it has quite a sporting go. It’s an uneven tale, albeit one told with enough passion and enthusiasm to encourage you to cut it some slack. And when it gets to the end of the last reel, it’s hard to feel shortchanged by what you’ve just seen.
For while Stardust has problems, it also has laughs, adventure, action and a whole lot in its corner to recommend it. And it is worth your time and attention. --Jon Foster

fun and something differentThis is not a film i wanted to see but my girlfriend pursuaded me to watch it. It was fun and light, with some more darker scenes. I thought the acting was done well and the special effects were very good.
It's not a serious film with a serious story but the story line was easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable as you (as the viewer) were introduced to different charactrs.
Would recommend to anyone with a lighter side.

Enjoyable Family FantasyMy children bought me this one for mothers day and I've only just gotten around to watching it, after my husband turned it off after the first 20 minutes some months ago rather unimpressed.
I persevered with it this time and thoroughly enjoyed this light hearted, fun family fairy tale about Tristan's quest to recover a fallen star (Clare Danes) and take her back with him to the village of Wall to show his love for the village beauty. It was very pacy and I liked the way all the characters were interweaved from the magnificent performance of Michelle Pfeiffer as the beautiful but evil witch seeking the fallen star to maintain her youth and beauty through to Robert De Niro's heartwarming potrayal of a gay pirate - watching him dressed up in women's underwear dancing the can can is something I will never forget and was a shrewd move on his part as an actor as it shows he can poke fun at his hard man image.
The scenery in this film is breathtaking and the cameo's by lots of well known actors (Ricky Gervais, Sienna Miller) are very entertaining and I would thoroughly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a good fairy tale.

A pleasant surpriseI'm not normally a fan of "family entertainment" or "fantasy" films ("Lord of the Rings" being an exception.) Even the thought of sitting through Harry Potter (I had to turn it off after 10 minutes) bores me. However, when I saw that Danes, De Niro and Pfeiffer were starring in "Stardust", I decided to give it a go. From beginning to end, it was a delight. I won't go into details about the plot, that's been written about enough. One of the great pleasures of the film is the light hand with which it is handled without ever diminishing the intensity of the various aspects of the story: the romance, the evil, the adventure. As a result, the film moves along more swiftly than its running time would suggest. Hats off to the director for accomplishing this so brilliantly. Visually the film is a stunner. The performances (with only one exception (Ricky Gervaise, so terrific in The Office, really needs to either learn, or be given the opportunity to do something different)are marvellous. Clare Danes, for my money the best actress of her generation, is superb once again, and Charlie Cox (a new actor to me)more than holds his own. Their scenes together are a delight to watch, charming without ever losing their sense of truthfullness or slipping into cloying sweetness. I look forward to seeing more of his work. Michelle Pfeiffer, whom I always adore and who never fails (The Fabulous Baker Boys, Age of Innocence, White Oleander, etc.) is magnificent. DeNiro in petticoats and feather boas is so brilliantly funny and believable that I'd love to see a sequel focusing on his character. It was a delight to see him return to the film in the closing coronation scene in an hysterically funny moment. Along with Brando, Pacino, Clift, and Seymour-Hoffman, he is one of America's greatest actors (I could watch Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and the more recent Flawless once a week without ever becoming bored or failing to be awed by his versatility). As good as Danes, Cox, Pfeiffer and De Niro are, the supporting cast are never overshadowed. All of them (ok, not Gervaise)are wonderful to watch. The film is loaded with many wonderful moments: Tristan (Cox) declaring his love for the girl who cares more about what he can give her than for him; Danes speaking of the heartbreaking sadness as she, a star, feels when she looks down and sees the cruelty of humanity and the hope she feels when she observes how humans can love; the reaffirmation of loyalty that Di Niro's pirate crew express to him after discovering his secret (though they always suspected) and his touching reaction to their attitude; Pfeiffer's seeming heartbreak when she loses everything and her immediate and scary reversal of attitude. These are just a few in a film loaded with great moments. I'm looking forward to watching it again.

'You want to grow up!'A fab twist of you're average fairy tale! Absolutely hilarious, with a lovely 'romance' element too. And you have to admit that De Niro is AMAZING!!!! Who'd have thought that it would work with him prancing about in ladies clothes and a feather bower?!? NO ONE!! And that's why it's so great!
Ignore the bad reviews. Seriously. BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT TRUE!!
