DETAILED REVIEW AFTER A MONTHS USE !!!!I did alot of research before i was convinced to go ahead with acer 5920G 8600M laptop. I bought it from elsewhere which included free acer laptop bag and mini mouse for 499£ ONLY a month ago.
My primary reasons to buy this Laptop was Speed, 3d Gaming and Spacious harddrive.
Additionally this laptop is capable of giving HDMI output, s-video output, optical output (via tos-link converter), very sharp tv-out even when playing 3d games. As a freebie you get an HD-DVD-Rom capable of writing to DVDS and CDs.
There is one problem it really gets hot when under continous stress like playing games. I was advised to update the bios and it did helped a little by kicking in fan much earlier however i still need to update VGA bios. 3D performance is adequate for most new games available. I have played doom3 on it for now as gaming is not my primary use of the laptop.
I also ran into problems with the dvd/hd rom when it used to disappear all of a sudden from my computer only to reappear when u do a hardware search refresh or put vista on standby and recover.. had to do a system restore but it did persisted was quite annoying than i just let it go and surprisingly it is not bothering me again :)...
battery life is very good u can easily get 3hrs n more while doing ordinary work or 2:45mins while watching a movie hooked via tvout. display is sharp but needs to be balanced if u r watching a movie on it. Keyboard layout is good and i had no trouble with any of the media keys.. but i must admit that touchpad could be better but really doesnt matter when overall it is such a nice peice of kit.
Sound is very good and you really enjoy movies and music without saying what the hell i m listening to.. i want to buy toslink converter soon to get optical out from the headphone sockets to get 5.1 audio...
Harddisk is really spacious so i have installed ubunto as well, had to remove the secondry partition converted it into extended partition before i could install linux.. but now vista and ubuntu both have no problems with eachother..
I also into some troubles with wireless LAN since i changed my adsl router to homeplug wireless router.. the signal just kept dropping after every 5-6 mins.. i found out that i had to change the setting from wireless a/b/g to just b/g and now it is all fine..
Thereis no bluetooth but not a problem can be added easily via dongles.
I know some peope comment on usb port layout as not very intelligent but i think they are very good interms if u want to dedicate this machine as media center pc u will have a front usb slot for IR as well as dvd-rom on front (if u keep laptop sideways front), apart from this for ordinary use i can easily plug inmy mouse to the right or left as needed on workspace requirement..
It is really good-looking far better then dell and most other laptops even some sony ones..
Vista experience index on factory default setting gives overall 4.7
processor: 4.9
memory: 4.8
graphics: 4.7
gaming graphincs: 4.9
primary harddisk: 5.3
after i updated the graphic drivers from laptopvideo2go.com the results were
processor: 4.9
memory: 4.8
graphics: 5.1
gaming graphincs: 5.3
primary harddisk: 5.5
overall: 4.8
There are also a lot of upgrade options.. like u can add a total of 4gb ram exten harddrive to a high speed sataii with more capacity and even upgrade cpu if u really want it.. some places also point graphic card can be upgraded with some tech exp and some risks ;). One more thing a blue ray drive is also available for similar models so dont deny possibility of replacing HD-DVD WITH BLUERAY..
so in the end it is a 10 star laptop without any doubt with rock solid performance capabilities and gaming power.. .. and i am very happy with it in every way possible.. get it as soon as u can if u have double thoughts..
highly recommended

High spec .. bargain price.I was looking around for a new laptop, comparing specs etc when I noticed that this model had a HD-dvd rom / dvd burner drive. This was of great interest to me as I have quite a few HD dvds, and it would be great to have another drive capable of playing them. The HD format war was of course won by blu-ray, but at the moment HD dvds are dirt cheap and are often cheaper than buying a normal dvd.
Anyway, to the laptop. It is a very stylish design and certainly stands out from the crowd. The screen display is wonderfully sharp and bright and a real pleasure to use.More details about my computer
Here is my Vista experience score..
Component Details Subscore Base score
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz 4.9 4.8
Determined by lowest subscore
Memory (RAM) 2.00 GB 4.8
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS 4.9
Gaming graphics 1023 MB Total available graphics memory 4.9
Primary hard disk 77GB Free (112GB Total) 5.2
A score of 3.3 is the minimum required to run vista aero. Pretty good scores I think (5.9 is the maximum). First couple of battery charges only indicated 2 hours use after a full charge, but now it is indicating 3 hours battery life, which is not bad considering the fast processor. Whole machine exudes an air of quality construction, well protected screen, firm keyboard action and smart design. The only let down is the slightly clunky dvd drive action.
The package does not come with any recovery dvd or OS discs or even driver discs. Instead, everything (drivers/applications/whole pc)can be recovered from a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. However, the Acer software installed easily allows users to burn their own bootable back up dvds, driver & application backups or full system image dvds; though these should really be included IMHO.
One niggle I had was with the wireless software. After setting my internet details / security settings I found that the system would "lose" them after a restart. It turned out I had to set them up in the Acer software too. After doing this though, the acer software still selected the auto profile and not my own by default. Most annoying. This niggle dissappeared after I updated the wireless driver from windows update so now all is well.
Before I could play a HD dvd disc I was made to download a 254mb update to the dvd software, no idea why, when it should be pre-installed.
Another surprise is that the 250gb hard disc, comes divided into 2 partions as standard (well 3 if you count the hidden recovery one).
There are many variations of this machine out there, some have 3gb ram but dont have the graphics card or 250 hard drive. Even ignoring the Hd-dvd drive, you'll be hard pressed to find a similar specced machine for this price. The various acer online stores used to sell this for £870 and Amazon was £699. Get it while you can, a bargain!

Acer 5920GThis is one of the most affordable notebook with hdmi in the market at the moment. Together with the 40 inch LCD TV I've got Samsung LE40A656A - 40" Widescreen 1080P Full HD LCD TV - With Freeview, they are perfectly matched. In order to get the sound to output together with the video signal via hdmi port, just set the audio control output to default on hdmi port on Vista. Granted the HD-DVD drive is obsolete (treat it as a DVD reader/writer at the same price) but you can get the movies for under a tenner, and the quality is just amazing when viewed on the LCD TV.
On built quality, it is quite a solid piece of notebook, with performance matching that of my other 17 inch laptop Dell Precision M90. The fan does come on more often during video playback, but at a low enough swoosh that is masked out by movie itself.
So all in all, i can recommend this laptop in a home entertainment setup, with the black gemstone reflective cover that matches my LCD TV's shiny black borders.
One concern I have before making the purchase is the Nvidia's announcement on certain 8400 and 8600 mobile GPU having manufacturing fault. But having tested mine under 3Dmark, the video playback is smooth and game play is quite capable with no artifacts. Plus you can get a 3 year acer advantage platinum warranty extension (with free bag and mouse )elsewhere which will come in handy if it ever fail, make up for all that concern.
