A sad disappointment
Dusty Springfield produced many memorable tracks and I hoped that this would provide an enjoyable more modern "take" on some of them. The treatment they receive on this album reminded me of a club act, whilst Shelby Lynne's voice totally lacks the quality or power of Dusty Springfield. Even if they are a bit dated in some ways, stick with the originals.

A perfect late night record
Shelby Lynne has always had the potential to make a perfect, late night, lounge record and with Just A Little Lovin' she has. Every song with the exception of Willie & Laura Mae Jones is stripped down and transformed into beguiling torch songs that emphasise the power of the original lyrics and Shelby's seductive vocals. Die-hard Dusty fans may recoil at the idea of some of her classic songs being transformed by another singer but Shelby's record is both a heartfelt tribute to Dusty and a rewarding album in its own right. If Dusty was still alive, I suspect she would have approved AND fallen in love with Shelby's interpretations herself. Sleep on this album and you'll miss out on one of the year's finest!

Not Bad, but................................
Shelby does a not bad job on this album, but, to me, the important question is; Would I ever rather listen to this than to a Dusty album or Dusty compilation? The answer is no. I'd rather listen to something like Cameo or a compilation any day. Shelby's voice lacks the fragility of Dusty's, and is so aggressive that she "attacks" some songs, e.g. "You don't have to say you love me" and "How can I be sure".

A futile exercise
2000's I Am Shelby Lynne may well have successfully drawn her away from her previous incarnation as straight down the middle country but it's cast a pale shadow on her subsequent career. That's not to say that recent efforts such as 2003's Identity Crisis have been poor, just that she's never really lived up to the promise of the I Am album on a consistent basis.

Just A Little Lovin' carries on that trend. Some might say that the attempt to channel Dusty Springfield was ill-advised and upon listening to the album I wouldn't neccesarily disagree. If you're going to record an album with four tracks off the seminal Dusty In Memphis album you are going to have to come up with something pretty special to make your make. Lynne doesn't really come close.

The attempt to provide a paired-down, almost simple, version of Dusty doesn't work, the biggest culprit being I Only Want To Be With You. If there's a person alive that would rather hear Lynne's cover version than Dusty's then I trust their padded cell is comfortable.

And therein lies the rub. There's nothing on the album that even comes close to matching the majesty of it's inspiration. For Dusty fans it's an interesting curiosity but not one that ever reaches "must-have" levels. Sometimes it seems, creative freedom doesn't always lead to the best ideas.

nice album
good luck to her - she thought about doing it first - i'm sure there are plenty more who wish they had done so

maybe just a little too laid back at times

but...when compared to the incredible Dusty In Memphis it doesn't really cut it

a little ambitious trying to sell out full size concert halls on the back of it - the album needs to fly off the shelves before september!
