It reads DVD's that other machines trip on, it writes DVD's consistently without failure, and, when it burns CDR's, it burns them rock solid - they'll even play without hitch in a car going down a road full of sleeping policemen. What this machine won't do is: write white-faced printable CDR's; read or write black CD's; write any form of 74 minute/650 mb CDR's. This last incapacity is a show-stopper if you're serious about archiving - i.e. HHB Gold 650mb blank discs are simply not recognised. (None of this this was a one-off fault with my machine - I tried two different machines. Conceivably a batch problem, so if you're giving it the benefit of the doubt, at least avoid machines manufactured October 2007 (see label on end of box).
Pity, this machine looks a lot prettier than most of its Liteon predecessors, but those old square boxes didn't turn their noses up at so much. There's a lesson there somewhere.
I'm glad I managed to get one of these while they were in stock. The cost including super saver delivery was £35. I don't think you'd get much change from £80 if you bought it in a shop. The device is itself is excellent - it supports just about every make of CD or DVD on the market, including burning these formats. It also supports the new dual layer recordable DVDs, so that should be useful for creating the very best quality DVD movies. You also get some free Nero software for burning DVDs and CDs. The USB 2.0 is very fast, you'd swear it was internal rather than external. My computer's internal DVD drive failed (the CD still works though for some reason), so this was an essential purchase.
