There is no denying that the quality and consistency of Diamonds albums during the 70s began to suffer towards the end of the decade. Occasionally he would come up with top rate songs like "You don't bring me flowers" but all too often his writings became no more than fillers for hit and miss albums.
Having said that, there are still a few great tracks on here that would sit happily with some of his earlier 70s albums, primarily his cover versions. "God only knows" & "Free Man in Paris" are very good indeed. Of his own material, only "Once in a While" and "Flowers" are really worthy of comparison with earlier stuff.
The album is too slick and smooth with no real depth of substance. Play this alongside "Tap Root Manuscript", "Moods" or "Serenade" and you can plot where Mr Songwriter turned into Mr Showbiz. All the rough edges had been smoothed over to such an extent there was no longer a cutting edge.
