After years of rumours, it turns out that Tim Burton was the perfect visionary to film iSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street/i, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway masterpiece, and the result is a macabre and moving musical movie as enthralling as anything Burton has ever done. The show's mix of gothic horror, Grand Guignol, very dark humor, and witty and beautiful music never was the stuff of traditional musical comedy, but it's a powerful work, and perhaps the richest of the late 20th century. In the movie, Burton's frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp, plays Todd, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 19th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber). Helena Bonham Carter, another Burton mainstay, is Mrs. Lovett, the barber's partner-in-unspeakable-crime. It's no surprise that Depp is an excellent choice to convey Todd's brooding intensity and volcanic rage, but he can also sing a score that is so challenging it has often played in opera houses (though not with the same style as the Broadway original, Len Cariou, and he occasionally lapses into pop style). Bonham Carter is small of voice and lacks the humour of the original Broadway Lovett, Angela Lansbury, but she sings on pitch, in rhythm, and in character at the same time, which is no small feat for a Sondheim show. Aficionados will regret the loss of certain musical passages--i"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"/i is just an instrumental overture and the chorus is gone altogether, among others, but the reassuring presence of orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and conductor Paul Gemignani ensures that the music feels right and sounds great. And the film's depiction of a Victorian London hellhole, with cinematography by Dariusz Wolski and costumes by Colleen Atwood, also looks and feels right.p/ The excellent cast is filled out by Alan Rickman as the villainous Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as his seedy Beadle, Sacha Baron Cohen as a rival barber, Jamie Campbell Bower as the young lover Anthony, Jayne Wisener as his object of affection, and Ed Sanders as the young Toby. For fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp who don't think they like musicals, iSweeney Todd/i should be a revelation (though not for the squeamish, as the gore is intense and completely appropriate). For fans of Broadway and Sondheim, it's hard to imagine getting a better adaptation than this. The fact that there's no newly composed Oscar-bait song sung by a Josh Groban-type over the end credits only makes it better. --iDavid Horiuchi/i

Hey this is a great movie. Classic Johnny Depp. He can play a part like no other. A true original in a great but macabre story. br /On Blu Ray it is brilliant.

Absolute bloody musical extravaganza!
I heard lots of negativities about this film including from my own family. As a hard core burton fan though I wanted to see it and have to so it was everything that I hadn't heard it was! Tim Burton claims he does not like and does not do musicals and then he comes up with this! No director but Burton could produce such brilliance from a background with which he was not familiar and did not like. I find myself loving this film more everytime I watch it and singing the songs constantly and absolute must see in my opinion especially in blu-ray with full digital surround sound!

Enjoyable blood thirsty musical
Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street [Blu-ray] [2007]]] br /Have seen many others complain about this musical well what were they expecting it to be I sometimes wonder about the IQ drop when taking on a review, it is well acted well sung typical Tim Burton film with Johnny Depp Helena Bonham Carter Alan Rickman and Tim Spall playing brilliant characters it has a good story line set to a gripping sometimes amusing and wicked songs backdrop the quality of the blue ray is tip top and colourful and as for the blood and gore well it is after all the demon barber of fleet street so guess what happens ????? You don't have to be a genius to work it out, costume and settings are beautifully filmed and look out for a suprise turn up of Sacha Baron Cohen yes he of Borat fame in a great and very funny role. Excellent and well worth the money.

A Bleeding Masterpiece
Best musical ever made, even if you don't like musicals this is highly reccomended.All the songs are good and catchy,in fact they are that good that i even brought the soundtrack.Johnny Depp is great in the film even though he is not a singer he sounds great.I watch this film at least once a month because it's that good,pitty there can't be a sweeny todd 2.

Top movie!
I love this movie! The music, the acting, the story and Tim Burtons vision is utterly perfect. I own both the standard DVD and the blu ray (steelbook) edition. 10/10.
