Watchable but nothing special
Overall I've given this series 3/5. It would have been 4/5 but for the excessive recycling of material from previous episodes. Every episode includes some kind of flash back to scenes from a previous episode and you'll end up seeing some scenes 20 plus time by the time you've watched the entire series.

Coupled with this a number of the episodes are 80-90% recycled material where there is a particular part of the series is revisited (performance of the Strike, assessment of the performance of the crew of the ligit ship etc.) The series is littered with these types of episodes and they are extremely frustrating to watch. The 10-20% new material in these episodes don't advance the storyline at all, they are just there to link a series of rehashed scenes from previous episodes.

Other than this the story line itself is good, nothing spectacular. The animation is high quality and there is a good variety of characters to both love and hate.

The episodes that are mostly new material are gripping and are definitely worth sifting through the lazy rehash episodes to get to.

Average-to-Good Show in Good Package
In a nutshell, Gundam SEED is not Gundam's greatest moment, but it is very accessible and this collection is a good package.

Firstly I should note, for anyone who's new to Gundam, that SEED begins an entirely new story set in an entirely new universe; it does not require any knowledge of previous series. The story focuses on one Kira Yamato, a teenager accidentally caught up in a conflict between space colonists and the inhabitants of Earth. Kira is pressed into service as a pilot for the Earth Federation's latest Mobile Suit, and finds to his dismay that his childhood friend Athrun is one of the enemy's aces. The plot is essentially a naval pursuit story (think Hornblower) set, initially at least, in space, with a lot of giant robot combat.

Those who are familiar with the original '79 Mobile Suit Gundam series will quickly notice that Gundam SEED is reworking the same tale, but SEED definitively forges off in a new direction about halfway, focusing on its central questions: why is Kira fighting, and who is he fighting for? It's not a terribly deep plot, but it serves it's purpose and is interesting at times - plus there are several 'Wham!' episodes, which is nice. The drama sometimes descends into teenage angst which isn't so good if that's not to your taste - but is great for teenagers!

A lot of Gundam SEED's time is taken up with the Mobile Suit action, which is animated well. The mechanical design work is (barring a few missteps) excellent and, although there is some animation recycling, the general quality is high. Gundam SEED is a product of the twenty-first century, and its animation looks the part. Sound is average-to-good and the music, while not necessarily good, is fearsomely catchy. Fukada, the director, has an ear for matching music to action.

Overall, SEED is enjoyable and easy to get into even if it isn't Gundam's greatest moment. Well worth a shot.

So much for the show itself. If you buy this product, you're buying the first half of the series - 25 episodes - on five discs and bundled with some extras (art book, T-shirt). An English (well, American!) dub soundtrack and the original Japanese dialogue (with subtitles) are both included. It's cheaper than buying the individual volumes, and is relatively good value. The second half of the show is scheduled for release on May 26th '08.

Indispensable for Gundam Seed fans
Multilaguage version, Japanese, English, French, German.
Subtitles in English, French, German, Dutch, Polish.
Very nice box. Comes with a little book with production drawings, and a T-Shirt size L, black, with Gundam Seed logo at front, and Strike and Aegis at back.

I'm very satisfied with this product. I'm waiting for the second box.
