The film is of solid quality and seems self-consciously unambitious. It is what it is, and it ain't bad. I loved the noir-throwback Americana and some of the cinematography, but I admit to being mostly interested in the score... that's why I ordered it in the first place. The film was like a sweet, sweet bonus disc.
Anyway, the music is dripping with atmosphere. It is characteristically FILM NOIR-esque, and yet beyond this definition in that Patton-ted style that seems to pervade whatever musical pidgeonhole he craps in next. Disorientation, found sound, guttural noises and vocals all go through the wringer and for this confessed Ipecacaholic, it's comfortingly familiar to hear. This WILL be the soundtrack for my evenings "in".
In other words, those familiar with Mike Patton's work will recognise his watermark throughout. Newcomers should - at least I hope they will, for their sake - come with open ears, and be prepared to be confused. You might just like it.
