best british film since trainspottinI bought this film not expecting too much, maybe another boring gangster flick like Essex boys, man was i wrong. From start to finish this film had me hooked. The violence and fighting is constant, but more importantly its believable.
Based on a true story it charts one mans life from his early days as a football hooligan to one of Englands most feared and respected figures in the Essex criminal underworld.
For fans of gangster movies, British movies, films with loads of fighting. or just good films. This is a must see must buy 10/10

Pretencious and over-rated .... and story just doesnt justify a film.I love crime thrillers and gangster movies and sometimes Brtish gangster flicks are among the best. Long Good Friday, Gangster Number 1, Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are 4 examples of great movies on British gangland. 'Rise of the Foot Soldier' however is not up to this high standard.
The film is based on a true story but the story was never worthy of being made into a film. The main character is a nothing but a thug and a football hoolighan turned bouncer and his gang is full of petty criminals and gangster wannabies. As far as gangsters go ... these guys seem small time. Some of their gang gets tortured by the Turkish mafia and instead of retaliating, these guys simply roll over and take it with nothing but a whimper. This 'Firm' seems to be nothing in gangland hiarchy.
Its obvious that this film tries to be the UK's answer to 'Goodfellas' but falls well short. In this aspect the film seems very pretencious. The acting is acceptable without being good and the rest of the film seems to be the same .... painfully average at best.
Overall, this is a very average movie and one I regret buying.
