The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
This is in my top 5 films of all time. I LOVE IT. I have never been big into Brad Pitt but he is brilliant as Jesse James, one of America's most famous outlaws. But the young Casey Affleck steals the show as the Bob Forde, the boy who befriends Mr. James and eventually becomes his downfall. I always thought that Jesse James was a bit of a gentleman and a hero but in this film you cant really tell. Sometimes he seems to be nice but then he violent mood swings show a differetn side to him. Also, I get the feeling that Pitt is acting as if he is on the brink of insanity. And Bob Ford has to be around this dangerous and unpredictable man. Also Sam Rockwell gives an excellent performance as Charlie Ford, brother of Bob and 'sidekick' to Jesse. I have never seen Sam Rockwell have a bad performance, whether it a phycho prisinor in 'the Green Mile' or a vengeful author in 'Frost/Nixon'. br / br /The beautiful cinamatogrophy in this is probably the best I have ever seen. From the golden Barley Fields to the dark Forests and the snow-capped Mountains, everything is extravegently shot. Also the soundtack compliments the story in ways I have only seen in a few other films. br / br /The film was based on a book by Ron Hansen and written in the 80's but you wouldnt have though to watch it. There have not be any Westerns in ages but now, since 2006 we seem to be getting lots. This, Appaloosa, 3:10 to Yuma, Seraphim Falls, The Missing and Ned Kelly. The Assassination of Jesse James... is by the far the best followed closely by Appaloosa and I would go as far as to say the Best film of 2007. br / br /WATCH THIS FILM. I know it is long but you are hooked from the start. Honestly.

a duality
From the very first image, you know that this movie is going to be a visual feast. There is wonderfull duality in the title and in the characters, you expect that Jessy James is going to be portraid as a hero and his killer as a villain but is Robert Ford really the coward and is Jessy James really the victim ? As the story progresses, you will br /find that the characters are more complicated than that and that several br /situations lead to an ending that is more unexpected than the title gives. Brad Pitt plays a negative character in which he has allways been better than his hero-characters. But he gets played off the screen by Casey Affleck as the boy that tries too much to be liked and his dissapointment in his hero leads him into a deadly situation. br /

An outstanding Western and character piece
This was definitely one of the best films that I saw in 2008 and hence why I bought it on DVD! It is a long, some would argue slow film but the stately pace suits this visually beautiful yet harsh, probably quite realistic look at the last years of Jesse James' life. The central performances by Brad Pitt and Casey Afflect are exceptional, being grounded, subtle and intelligent examinations of 2 flawed human beings. It held my attention throughout.
