Utterly great
There are a fair old mix of reviews of this one. Terrible handling and gameplay some say; well I expect they have made the same mistake I did when I first fired it up. Do not, under any circumstances, just put your foot down and expect to get past so much as the first bend.

Even with a high quality wheel and pedals, this game requires some tact and diplomacy. To succeed you need to drive SLOWER ... or at least slow enough to control your cornering in particular. Kind of like real driving actually.

Which isn't to say Grid is realistic, because it isn't. It's gameplay, with all of the nutty compromises that brings with it. But it does require an element of care, you need to brake hard into corners, and accelerate hard out of them.

Really, you need to tap dance on your pedals. Seen those close up shots of a rally driver's feet in action? Or, dare I say, the Stig? You need to do that.

Once you have got the hang of it you can race, win and have a ludicrous amount of fun. I've no idea if I will finish the game, or if I even care. I'm having too much of a blast trying to win races.

Utterly brilliant, utterly addictive.

Looks can be deceptive
Anyone planning to buy this game needs to be aware of the following. Visually it is without fault. Stunning in fact. But from the first time you try to turn any of the cars on offer you will soon realise that this is an awful game. I have tried and tried to get the controls of the game to allow me to enjoy even the most basic of races. Video games are supposed to be challenging but ultimately fun. Wheres the fun in spending the first few hours trying to alter the controls so that you can atleast complete a lap without totalling the car. i've given up. I'm off to buy a fun game instead. Anybody got any ideas?

Out of Control
I got the game yesterday off Metaboli's download site - never again. I was impatient for a new game. I spent three hours+ doing a download then a few hours trying to get it to work (-novirtual nonsense), adding a patch and updating drivers. When I did get it working, it was terrible since reasonable car control is severely lacking and the other cars are only too happy to take you out too often. They are also quicker and recover from the frequent crashes very easily. Understeer and oversteer are rampant. The game seems to be of the Carmageddon variety: smashing and crashing ad infinitum. If I could get a refund I would. System wise I have a Core2duo at 3.5GHz, 8800GT overclocked to 700/1000, 2GB RAM and use an Xbox360 controller (which I can't reconfig in the game). So the system is up for it and the controller is fine. I also have an Xbox360 with various racing games. Forza2 for instance is much more of a racing game - I can at least drive the cars and win a race. If someone likes unwinnable races and crashing a lot, then this is for you. If not, save your money for something better.

A refreshing change
Thank you Codemasters for not going down the EA route, there isn't even the annoying little CD key, Thank you.

Now with that said I can say that this is a brilliant game which is great fun. I bought this game after I had tried DiRT which was also very good and I can honestly say that this is a great improvement on it. It has a sort of arcade like feel to it which make it more light hearted and more fun because you can still play it as a proper hardcore game or a casual game that you pick up every now and again.

Looks nice but gameplay begins to irritate
On the plus side, the game looks great. The cars and scenary are beautifully rendered and the collection of race cars is pretty comprehensive.

However, the way the opponent cars drive is ridiculously unrealistic. Rather than getting strung out in line, as happens in most motor racing, they spend most of the time driving around two abreast in a big bunch - there's no concept of some cars being slower than others. As you normally start a race from near the back of the grid this makes overtaking cleanly virtually impossible, especially on some of the narrow street circuits (for me anyway).

Secondly, while on one hand the damage modelling tries to be realistic, the effects of the damage aren't so you can end up driving around in a write-off. Now, I can see why having a 'real world' level of fragility of the cars would lead to frustrating gameplay - with it being so difficult to overtake, you'd constantly be crashing out of races - but you can't have it both ways... If you want realistic damage, then give me realistic racing.

Finally it does all get a little repetitive - some of the quite fun races like demolition derby, which give a little light relief, only appear early on so you end up just racing GT and Le Man cars
