A very good adaptation of the popular series of books by Tony DiTerllizi and Holly Black, iThe Spiderwick Chronicles/i is one of the few family films in recent years to seamlessly integrate magical elements with a potent drama that will strike a chord with many kids. pAn exceptionally talented Freddie Highmore (iCharlie the Chocolate Factory/i) plays twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, caught up in their parents' divorce and coping with a decision by their mother (Mary-Louise Parker) to uproot the boys and their sister, Mallory (Sarah Bolger) from New York City to a small town. There, the broken family moves into a spooky old mansion passed on to them by the kids' great-aunt, Lucinda (Joan Plowright), who is spending her twilight years in managed care and whose scientist father, Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn), disappeared some 80 years ago. Jared, angry, defiant, and determined to live with the father who seems to have abandoned him, investigates strange happenings and discovers Arthur's secret notations on fairies, ogres, and other mythical creatures that live both in and outside the house. Having no idea where his curiosity is leading, Jared soon finds that he and his family are under siege from goblins and a powerful ogre (Nick Nolte) who wants Arthur's notebook. It helps, too, that director Mark Waters, who brings a warm and knowing touch to outlandish material (iFreaky Friday/i), has a way of making the spectacular elements of iThe Spiderwick Chronicles/i genuine enough to stir real excitement and suspense. Great Fantasy Film
I bought this for 2.98 but had no idea what it was about having not read the books. I guessed it was a fantasy from the cover. br / br /My wife and I watched it prior to showing it to our children. br / br /Within 10 seconds I knew it was unsuitable for a 4 yr old and withina minute I knew it was unsuitable for our 6 yr old. I would guess 8+ is what it is aimed at. br / br /Having said that my wife and I loved it and were gripped throughout. It is fast moving at quite short....and I was certainly left wanting more. Shame they condensed the books into 1 because I could easily have sat through a sequel. br / br /All in all a great adventure where you can be imersed in a world with interesting concepts.

Indeed disappointing
This movie did not meet the expectations. br /The pace is rushed, the climax - abrupt, and some of the dialogues - plain cheesy. Oh, and the rip-off Griffin ... although ILM says muscle definition is improved over hippogriff from HP3, that - and the fluff - seem to be the main differences. br /Two out of five is not generous, but also my daughter (9) did not like it, so two it is.

good film good story not for the younger kid could be a bit scrare in parts will like it if you are a bit young at heart and like the harry potter stuff hope they make more could take off so older kids should like it

Good Watch
I have never read any of the books on which this movie is based on. However taking the movie as seperate i found it to be very enjoyable, i loved going into the fantasy world, and thought the special effects were really good. i recommend this to anyone as a good family movie, and a worth while purchase as its a movie you can pull out to watch again every so often

Excellent Family Fantasy
We first saw this on Sky Movies and enjoyed it so much decided to get ourselves a copy so that we can watch it anytime, we all enjoyed it that much!
