The daughter of acclaimed British folk artists Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Eliza Carthy has long been one of the major protagonists in the UK neo-folk renaissance. A dedicated and passionate artist, Carthy is also highly eclectic, as evinced on previous albums such as iRed Rice/i, which blended drum bass with folk fiddle amongst other unusual but largely successful experiments. iDreams Of Breathing Underwater/i is Carthy's seventh solo record and is predictably unpredictable. Opening with the 12-bar blues "Follow The Dollar", the album shapeshifts through the ethereal "Hug You Like A Mountain" and "Lavenders", the meandering "Rosalie", the funereal "Two Tears" and the captivating "Mr Magnifico" - right up to the dramatic, swinging denouement "Oranges And Seasalt". Carthy’s vocals are as mercurial as her arrangements as she switches from angelic to angry, poignant to potent. There's never a dull moment as the songs flit insouciantly between Latin and reggae, electronica and blues, further underlining Carthy's skill as a songwriter and her imagination as an artiste.

A great album. Bought as a prize, I gave it a spin before handing it over, and was very impressed!

Not good. Not good at all.
I saw Eliza Carthy in Leeds when she was touring promoting this CD - what a great gig that was. Really brilliant - the musicians were tight, the intros were humourous and the entire evening was well received. br / br /Now move on six months. br / br /I've finally got round to buying the CD. Ouch! The arrangements are, well, messy to be kind. What on earth were they thinking about when they mixed it? br / br /For all my enjoyment of the gig - and, believe me, it was fantastic - this CD just *doesn't* stand up to scrutiny. It's certainly one to be avoided even if seeing Eliza in concert is not to be missed.

Original and refreshing.
I bought this cd having heard the great track Mr Magnifico. I was,at first,abit disappointed as Mr Magnifico doesn't reflect the style of the whole album and I had expected something more flowing and traditional. However, the more I listen to it the more I love it.For me,it has quite an experimental feel and it provides a refreshing relief from so much of the formulaic bland drivvle that is about.

Unusual folk/rock/jazz fusion
For those of us whose attitude to acoustic music tends to be... nice song, sad that the singer has a cold, or whose attitude to rock music is... I'm sure I've heard that before, Eliza Carthy has produced an album reminiscent of Steel Eye Span, Fairport Convention and other late 60s and 70s crossover bands. Its refreshing and upbeat and she doesn't have nasal problems of most folk singers. There are a range of styles to the tracks so you don't get bored. I think this one will be played for many years.

Not for me!
I love all of Eliza's traditional folk music,and have been an avid fan of her and her family since they very first started, but I simply hate this stuff. I was excited to see a new album from Eliza, but WHAT a disappointment! The lyrics don't make any sense at all (to me anyway), neither does the "music" . Stick to what you do best Eliza. This is one I definately won't be buying. Simply AWFUL!
