Product DescriptionThis is set of hand made bat boxes standing a full 16.5 inches tall by 5" wide and 4" thick at the top it is much bigger than many others on the market with a 25mm entrance hole and made from 21mm solid redwood it will last a long time. The boxes come plain untreated or a light coat of animal friendly water based wood preserve on the outside only as bats are delicate creatures. Natural nesting sites such as hollowed trees, old buildings and barns are not as readily available these days, this bat box will provide a safe haven for them to roost during the day, as the tempreture changes they tend to move around to cooler nesting sites so it is preferable to site three boxes together in a circle around a tree trunk about 5 metres high and avoid any obstacles such as low branches which may damage their wings when entering the box.

While I have not bought this box, the fact that the box is described as a bat "nesting" box disturbs me, given the fact that bats do not nest and I would be cautious about how suitable such a bat box would be. They do not bring in materials to make a nest. They roost, by clinging to or hanging from surfaces within a suitable roost. Also, the fact that the box is bigger than many others on the market does not necessarily mean it's better. Bats do not need large roost spaces, but they do need them to not be drafty, and a larger box may well be too large for comfort.
