Food for Manga lovers
I'm reviewing this DVD from a visual aspect as the genre really does nothing for me on a personal level. Also the story (loosely sewn around the Hellsing TV series) is pretty thin, concerning saving the British Empire from "freaks" including the mysterious rogue vampire Arucard (almost a classic anagram of Dracula), and is just an excuse for the eye candy. And like it or hate it, eye candy is the word. Shown in the original video aspect of 1.78:1 anamorphic the animation is seamless and impressive, even with the top heavy dark palette action sequences. Three track audio choice including DTS, Dolby, and Japanese 5.1 (recommended)is clear and crisp, both music and dialogue. The blood red menu's, 18+ viewing age recommendation, and modest array of extra's should keep the most hard to impress manga fan satiated for a while. Clearly aimed at the 16-25 demographic, and fulfills that niche well. As I said, like it or hate it as a genre or style of animation, you can't help but be impressed at the presentation and audio. 4 stars.

Stylish action, average story
The story of Hellsing is quite simple. The descendants of Abraham Van Hellsing have set up an organisation to destroy Vampires and their spawn in England. To do this they employ their own tame Vampire Alucard to kill them off. Along the way Alucard turns a police officer Seras onto the dark side and together they fend off both Vampires and rival vampire-ridding organisations.

The real draw for me with Hellsing is the animation. Fight scenes are done with real style and the character of Alucard commands scenes firing his colt into masses of the undead. Make no mistake there will be blood, and plenty of it. The acting is a tad cheesy, but then its Manga so you make allowances when the action is this good.

Volume 1 is certainly a treat, however with little to anticipate for the following volumes, other than more of the same, I doubt I'd come back for more. So although I enjoyed the style, as a story I wasn't overly entertained.

Blood-sucking anime
Hellsing draws on Bram Stoker's Dracula and mixes it with a very Japanese interpretation of British culture, UK police procedural dramas (more Hot Fuzz than The Bill) and Roman Catholicism.

This is all put into an anime blender and comes out as a fantastically paced action serial with blood, guns and kawaii looking female characters. Some of the dubbed English dialogue is a bit hokey but it doesn't take away from this being an entertaining first installment.

"It's a long time since I've had my head cut off"
"Drink my blood, police girl," says Alucard, a kind of super-vampire created and used by the Hellsing Organisation, who protect the British Empire from the supernatural. . . This Britain is itself a kind of spiritual fantasy - of Empire, Christendom, green fields, guns and the Queen. The mixture of it all is curiously compelling, the various characters set on their series of collisions, confrontations and mutations, the explosive, prolonged gore-fights cut through with scenes of whistling calm.

On a side note, this highly stylised rework of vampire lore seems to have some kinship to the Frank Miller way of hardening and renewing, particularly with the high incidence of stark black, white and red compositions.
