"This group's gonna wreck your mind..."Andy Dunkley's hip assertion as he warms up an already near-hysterical audience at its legendary Fairfield Halls gig that 'this group's gonna wreck your mind... completely...absolutely" is putting the case for Mott's legendary 'live' status a tad strongly perhaps. But take a straight run at this high-octane four-hour entertainment and you can see where the DJ compere was coming from. The Brit rockers constant bemoaning of their inability to transfer the magic of live performance to their studio work has been put to rights across four CDs nestling inside a knowledgeably anecdote-fuelled 46-page hardback read by band fanzine editor Keith Smith, replete with rare pictures. A band of two parts, Mott's early incarnation as rock n' roll proggers is tackled by disc 1's UK and European sorties, with barnstorming renditions of faves `Rock 'n Roll Queen' and `Thunderbuck Ram'. By disc 2's 1972 Philly theatre gig, greatcoats are off to reveal the spandex that glammed better fortune brought by fan David Bowie and the song that saved them, 'All The Young Dudes'. Yes, there's repetition: we get three Dudes and equally copious dollops of later smashes 'Roll Away The Stone and 'All The Way From Memphis' culled from US dates. Yes, there are occasional warts as hissy tape fights poor sound balance and some ragged musical moments. But there's nothing to stay Mott's pace and energy nor diminish the shining quality of their material. A lavish package, only missing scratch `n sniff Woodbines and Watneys in its successful evocation of another rock age, this is a must for completists and a treat for the curious.

David Bowie and Bad Company's future Ready For Love feature in this comprehensive live retrospectiveMott The Hoople: In Performance 1969-74-Live is limited to 2,000 copies only and referred to simply as Limited Edition Box on it's Angel Air label's website. The 4 CD set is made up of the contents of 3 previously released Live collections (containing 5 CDs total as originally released) minus 2 tracks. For further information on the quality of the recordings themselves the reader can read multiple reviews for each individual CD set on Amazon.

br /CD 1 has recently been issued as Fairfield Halls, Live 1970 (2007)
br /Tracks 1 - 7 were recorded on Sep 12, 1970 while Mott The Hoople was touring with label-mates Free who were recording for a live album. The label decided to record Mott at the same time as increased costs would be minimal. Out of the recordings, only Keep A Knockin' was originally released (on the Wildlife LP). As a bonus, the version of Keep A Knockin' here is different- either from a later or earlier performance that same night. The set also includes Neil Young's Ohio, which the band never recorded in the studio, the song thus never being issued officially during the band's lifetime.
br /
br /The original CD had 5 bonus tracks pulled from a concert on the next CD set that In Performance 1969-74-Live draws from. For some reason only 4 are listed as being included on In Performance. The tracks were recorded in Stockholm, Sweden on Feb 16, 1971 for airplay:
br /
br / Long Red
br / The Original Mixed Up Kid
br / (Walkin' With a Mountain - not listed as being included here)
br / Laugh At Me
br / Thunderbuck Ram
br / (Keep A Knockin' - not included here or on the Fairfield Halls CD)
br /
br /CD 2 consists of the second CD of the 2 CD set All The Way From Stockholm To Philadelphia - Live 71/72 (1998) AKA A Tale of Two Cities (2000). The original release consisted of two shows originally recorded for radio although the quality is not quite what one would expect on the air today.
br /
br / The first disc of All The Way From Stockholm To Philadelphia - Live 71/72 was the complete Feb 16, 1971 Stockholm concert just itemized above including the two tracks in parenthesis not included in this collection. The second disc (included here) was recorded at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, PA on Nov 29, 1972. The recording quality is that of a high quality bootleg but not quite as good as the Stockholm performance. Still, Bad Company fans who favor long extended jams may prefer Mick Ralphs' 12:49 guitar jammin' Ready For Love to the more concise version on his later band's first LP.
br /
br / David Bowie introduces this concert and sings with Hunter on All The Young Dudes.
br /
br /CDs 3 and 4 are the 2CD set Two Miles From Live Heaven (2004)
br /
br /The first 5 tracks are said to be from the Jun 1971 concert at the Fillmore West but I suspect No Wheels To Ride is really from the Jul 1970 or Sep 13, 1970 concert- I'll add that info when I find out . . .
br /
br /Tracks 6-9 are dated Sep 13, 1973 and probably from TV, maybe the Midnight Special? This could be Ariel Bender (AKA Luther Grosvenor)'s first gig with the band.
br /
br /Tracks 10-13 are bonus demos from the 69-71 period. Mick Ralphs is apparently on vocals with Guy Stevens producing- perhaps some of these versions predate Hunter's joining the band by a week or so.
br /
br /CD 4 is live at the Santa Monica Civic Center Apr 13, 1974.
br /This concert was originally an FM radio broadcast, has great sound and is dazzling rock `n' roll!
