Alison is an old friend from school, but I'm not biased in any way with this recording! br / br /The musicality and individuality displayed in her playing on all the tracks is an inspiration to all. br / br /It has been a huge help in preparing students for A'level and music college performances in showing them a very different yet incredibly successful approach to the concertos. br / br /Well done Ali! br /

Great music, shame about the pictures
Great music, a much better performance of the Haydn than the turgid effort I witnessed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra this week, maybe she had a cold but seemed to be constantly out of breath and endlessly fiddling with her trumpet as though she thought it was out of tune. br / br /Can't say I like the images on the CD either - if she wants to be taken as a serious musician - which I think she does - she needs to get away from these over-styled air-brushed images. AB in live performance is much more girl-next-door and refreshingly honest for that. If this is EMI's idea of how to promote her, they've got it wrong. br / br /That said, a recommended CD and good to have 4 complete pieces compared to the random collection of Caprice.

Terrific trumpet concertos
This is an excellent disc of four of the standard works in the trumpet repertoire. Alison Balsom shows us why she has made such a stir in the musical world with her freshness, verve, tenderness and a beautiful tone. The lovely, sharp clarity of the sparkling vigorous passages is a joy but what I really loved most was the tender, beautifully phrased slow movements of both the Haydn and the Hummel concertos. It is here that Balsom shows her real control and unflashy virtuosity, and they are truly excellent. The orchestral playing is top-notch, too and the disc is worth buying even if you already own other recordings of these works. br / br /I do have an objection to the packaging. Jonathan Freeman-Attwood's notes are very good, but I could have done without quite so many photos of Ms Balsom looking sultry in an off-the-shoulder dress. A portrait of the artist is quite appropriate on a CD, and obviously they will want it to be a flattering one, but this makes her look like just another in the line of moderately-talented people of both sexes being marketed on sex-appeal. She isn't. Alison Balsom is a musician of the first rank and I think that she - and we - deserve something a little more dignified. br / br /However, dismounting from my hobby-horse, the disc itself is a huge pleasure and a minor packaging gripe shouldn't put you off. It's terrific, and I recommend it in the warmest terms. br /

Refreshing !
The best rendering of Hummels trumpetconcerto I've heard. Alison Balsoms playing reminds me Maurice André playing..renewed. BUT I don't think this could have been possible without Deutche Kammerphilharmonie from Bremen. br /Balsom and the orchestra are equals in the art of music, the balance is perfect.
