Memphis Tennessee
Granted, this collection does not represent Elvis' strongest material. However, it does contain his great number 1 hit, (You're the) Devil in Disguise, which is country/rock at its best. There are also several other gems, not least the title track, as well as Long Lonely Highway and Witchcraft, which are real foot tappers. I don't detect any vocal deterioration here, but it obviously has a mellower, less urgent feel to it than the recordings made at the end of the decade in Memphis.

Slowly but not so surely!
In 1990 I enjoyed the "lost" album and this release is the deluxe version of that. These recordings from '63 and Jan' 64 of course were at one time being laid down for the year's studio album (following on from '62's Pot Luck set.) This never happened and the tracks were scattered over a number of albums and singles over several years. The main problem with this set tho'is the not so great material and the fact that Elvis' vocals are beginning to hint at the film soundtrack "thickness" that he was dogged with until late '67. He never lets rip on this set and the performances although well performed and polished are a little boring. Western Union is uncannily reminiscent of "Return to Sender" from the year before.
