Editorial reviews
Amazon.co.uk ReviewiThe Dark Knight/i arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.p/ In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan (iMemento/i) follows his critically acclaimed iBatman Begins/i with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like iSpider-Man 2/i and iIron Man/i because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--iThe Dark Knight/i is a film for the ages. --iDavid Horiuchi/i

The Dark Knight reviewThe Dark Knight is a follow up to the 2005 Batman Begins. I normally do not like Batman films, but when I saw Batman Begins, I thought it was excellent. A few years later when I heard there was a new Batman film coming out, I expected it to be a disaster because it would be very hard to top Batman Begins. However, The Dark Knight was a tremendous film. Throughout the whole film, there many surprising and emotional scenes. The action was also very exciting and gripping.

br /By far, my favourite character was the Joker. He was very interesting. The make-up he was wearing gave the impression that he was just a clown, but when he started talking, you would understand why all the characters in the film were terrified of him. He also used to tease victims and tell them stories about his life before hurting them.

br /Overall, I think that The Dark Knight is an exceptional film and it is one of those films that can be watched over and over again without the viewer loosing interest for a long time.

Cringey. Chris Nolan can't direct action films. 'The Worst Film Ever Made'.Nolan did a really good job of Batman Begins - mainly due to the great story line and Christian Bale's incredible performance as a beefed up Batman. He looked and acted great and was hugely believable - which is what you want from a film. In The Dark Knight he looked emaciated (thin) (not enough time to gain pounds from losing it again for Rescue Dawn). He wasn't convincing in the role he was playing - which is i think partly why the film was so heavily perforated with odd characters (Dent) and muddled plot developments. Nolan knew Bale had lost it in this film and pretty much hid Batman in the backdrop of the Joker and Dent and all the other muddled on goings. Nolan was pushing his luck making this - his idea of this genre is far too 'Dad-ish' or 'teacher-ish / old man ish. He just isn't hip enough to cut this genre - he really isn't! Especially the humour - it sucked. He is a majestic, narrative, Sober and intelligent film maker (think Memento, Insomnia. The Prestige) Its seriously uncool and actually brings down Batman Begins in credibility. Who would disagree that this film isn't 'cringey'? Lastly Maggie G was awful and isn't attractive enough to be Rachel Dawes, shes just annoying. At least Katie Holmes has that neurotic quality and is attractive. Bad film, boring and over long. Muddled.

Simply BrilliantThe Dark Knight will be one of the first Super Hero Movie which has broke all the records held by its peers like Spider Man, Iron Man Superman Returns.

br /Heath Ledger's performance as 'Joker' has immortalized one of the best screen play Villain in modern times. Unlike 1989's Batman, this will be the best comic book adaptation successfully put to screen and I doubt whether there will be any movie like this unless Christopher breaks his own record with an even more successful sequel.
br /
br /I have always preferred Christian Bale as Batman rather than Val Kilmer, George Clooney. This time he displayed a much more mature role. If 'Batman Begins' had created the groundwork for the upcoming sequel, then Dark Knight proved to be a superior and more thriving motion picture. It is a real tragedy to miss a prodigy like Heath.
br /
br /Unlike Jack Nicolson 'Joker'which proved to be a funnier adversary of the Batman, Heath as 'Joker' was Devil's Incarnate, one who would kill with a smile on face and the most challenging nemesis ever to be put up in a Super Hero based Movies. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two Face was an excellent pick and he balanced his role delightfully.
br /
br /Apart from the brilliant performance by supporting actors like Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman as Lt. Gordan, the movie provided us with some of the unforgettable musical score by typical talents James Newton Howard Hans Zimmer.
br /
br /Closing Note: Worth watching multiple times, and if you are an avid Movie Collector then you can add this to your collection. It wouldn't be a disappointment.

TiresomeI'd heard such good reviews about this film I was quite excited when I went to watch it. I really enjoy the Burton films, so I thought I'd like this one too since it seemed pretty dark.
br /
br /But... the plain fact is that I just found it boring. It went on for a very long time, the story just didn't grab me. I think my little brother nearly went to sleep next to me, and I must admit I was glad when it was over.
br /
br /I did like the Joker though- the bloke who was playing him was pretty good, and I liked his insane antics. But I found Bruce dull and without much character. I understand a lot of this would have been developed in the previous movie (which I didn't see) but the fact of the matter is that you should still be able to sympathise with a character without watching sequals/prequels/whatever.
br /
br /I think this is just an example of a movie that has recieved a lot of hype. My brother liked it, and I know other people do- and I respect their opinions. But everytime I mention I dislike this movie my peers start sharpening their knives. So I ask you to respect my opinion too. For me, this film was a disappointment.
