Amazon.co.uk ReviewAre you ready to get down with the sickness? Movie logic dictates that you shouldn't remake a classic, but Zack Snyder's iDawn of the Dead/i defies that logic and comes up a winner. You could argue that George A. Romero's 1978 original was sacred ground for horror buffs, but it was a low-budget classic, and Snyder's action-packed upgrade benefits from the same manic pacing that energized Romero's continuing zombie saga. Romero's indictment of mega-mall commercialism is lost (it's arguably outmoded anyway), so Snyder and screenwriter James Gunn compensate with the same setting--in this case, a Milwaukee shopping mall under siege by cannibalistic zombies in the wake of a devastating viral outbreak--a well-chosen cast (led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer), some outrageously morbid humor, and a no-frills plot that keeps tension high and blood splattering by the bucketful. Horror buffs will catch plenty of tributes to Romero's film (including cameos by three of its cast members, including gore-makeup wizard Tom Savini), and shocking images are abundant enough to qualify this iDawn/i as an excellent zombie-flick double-feature with i28 Days Later/i, its de facto British counterpart. --iJeff Shannon/i

Daft, Derivative and poorI have resisted watching this movie for a long while, now that I have - I think the minority vote gets my support on this one. Its terrible. Its like 28 Days Later ... [DVD] [2002] without the intelligence. Probably closer to Resident evil in terms of intelligence, but at least Resident Evil does not take itself too seriously.

br /Running zombies, cardboard characters and a very poorly written script. Is this really meant to be a remake of George Romero's cult classic? Do these americans really mean to insult our intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I do not hate remakes, but of late Hollywood has pumped a lot of remakes without paying attention to the ideals or vision of the original films.

br /The first 20 minutes were great and well shot but after that it was all down hill. For example;
br /
br /The characters were terrible. How did Ving Rhames sign on to this picture?
br /
br /As for the main character, I just found the leap from ordinary joe to hard core zombie killer a bit difficult to swallow.
br /
br /Zombies get blown up, set on fire - hey no problem, the zombies are fire proof - they just get back up after a few minutes and are still capable of running. I guess the director has not heard that dead bodies tend to build up gases like methane and hydrogen sulfide.
br /
br /Place a doctor, a fully trained policeman and a number of civilians in a shopping mall with cars and trucks in parking lot, electronics, sports equipment, medical supplies, plumbing equipment and these characters cannot think of building anything to fortify the mall or help their sharp shooting neighbour escape.
br /
br /What about the work on the buses, you might add - Rubbish. The A-team would have done better.
br /
br /What about the political andsocial undertones, that were central to George Romero's cult classics - well. It seems these factors were discarded, in favour of make up and specail effects.
br /
br /But hey, these are the same guys who voted for Bush and Clinton (twice), what can I say, they are after all Americans. In the hands of a British director, with half the budget, this film would have lived up to the hype.
br /
br /I guess the MTV generation would love this, having grown up on video games and resident evil. But for me, a waste of time and money.

Best zombie movie ... ever...Best zombie movie ever, even better than the original Dawn of the Dead, which now drops to second place. Only four stars because I did not like the zombie baby scene ... which was stupid and unnecessary ....otherwise a great cast, and a great thriller .... not just for zombie movie fans.

My favourite zombie film.Dawn of the Dead is a 2004 remake of they George A. Romero classic from the 60's. The remake is unique and different from tghe origonal, having a different story (save for the Mall), has brought the story up to date, made the charecters and their reactions more believable and given a new twist to the zombies. Personally I prefere this to the origonal, but thats just my opinion. The film is directed by Zack Snyder, who has also directed 300 and Watchmen. I have seen both versions of the film but the directers cut is the superior cut. Firstly there is more violence, and a few more zombie scenes all together, as well as several brief charecter development scenes, but these are short and do not interrupt the pace of the movie. On the DVD there is also a dozen extra deleted and alternate scenes (separate from the movie and not included for resons such as pacing and similar scenes at different points in the film. The commentary track on the deleted scenes and directors cut film is informative and thourough, not simply a chat between the participants as some recent DVD comentarys have become. The DVD also contains documentarys on how the zombies were cast and how make-up was applied. My personal favourite is the exploading heads documentary. This film is not particually scary, but more intense and subspenseful, with a few big 'jump' moments. My only dissappointment of the DVD was the lack of the theatrical version of the film (I saw the film of TV first), but fortunatly the low price more than justifys this. I highly recomend this film if you enjot zombie films, along with any horror fan. If you are not a fan of horror films I still recomend the film but not so highly, as it does not offer much to non-zombie fans.

Dawn? All right film, shame about the title.

br /Shaun of the dead a film supposedly set around the same time as this, but in Britain and was a absolutely fantastic film! The title is very much appropriate as Shaun is the main character. In Dawn of the Dead, I can find no character called Dawn! I have watched it over and over again, even in slow-mo and the name was not even brought up.
br /I am positive the main female character is not called Dawn and neither are any other female or male characters in the film.
br /The fact that the Film is missing its main character does not look like a good start.
br /This film left me very confused, as I was always waiting for the expected entrance of Dawn. Alas she never came!
br /This paradox in the films plot was as effective as alcohol on my brain.
br /This film left me as confused as I am under the influence!
