Amazon.co.uk ReviewProving that the Xbox 360 isn’t just for hardcore fans of shooters and racing games,
Lips offers a karaoke extravaganza that should appeal to fans of the popular
SingStar range. The basics work the same as any karaoke game: You sing along to a wide range of music videos, trying to match the same pitch and tone as the original.
Each song comes with the original music video |

Lips comes bundled with motion-sensitive microphones, so how you move--not just how you sing--also becomes a part of game play. Other people without microphones can join in, too, using standard Xbox 360 controllers for virtual claps, cowbells, and other accompaniments.
You aren't restricted to singing just the songs that are included on the game disc. You can sing along to any of the .MP3 files stored on your Xbox 360's hard drive. "Lips" should ensure more than a few fun party moments--even if the neighbours do complain.
Key Features - Sing along: Croon to the original music videos for songs from the likes of Duffy, Young MC, and Peter Bjorn and John.
- Motion mics: The game comes bundled with two unique motion-sensing microphones, which allow you to dance or play an instrument as you sing.
- My song: Sing along to songs from your own .MP3 collection by selecting any piece of music stored on the hard drive of your Xbox 360 or networked PC.
- Hi-tech chorus: Up to four people can join in on the same song, either as a duet or by using a controller to simulate a tambourine, cowbell, or other accompaniment.
- Greatest hits: Download new songs and music videos from Xbox Live to keep your stable of songs updated with the latest tracks or golden oldies.

Fun fun funFirst of all this game is a lot of fun. It has a great song collection of 40 songs on the CD (41 if u download A-Ha's 'take on me' which is free) with hits like Leona Lewis's Bleeding Love and Blondie Call me. There are enough songs to suit everyone. You can sing alone or there is co-op or Vs modes. In co-op mode it lets you sing the high or hard parts of parts of the song while the other person sings the backing, so you sometimes are singing at the same time especially during the chorus which is nice. In vs. you both sing the entire song, trying to earn the most points to beat each other! We only have 2 mics but it is possible to have up to six people singing together.
What i like most about this game is the options. The wireless mics have lights which can be set to a variety of colours (we picked the pink and purple colours) which is a cool touch. The lights can be set to flash in time with rhythm or other options. The moves can be a bit confusing and hard to do at the same time as singing, but we'll get used to them, and they are very funny when you're playing with other people! In addition there is an option to turn the voice of the singer down either a little bit 'soft' (so you can have a little help lol) or turn it down a lot 'hard' which means the singers voice can barely be heard, and you are left with the backing track. This can also be done on songs you upload from your MP3 player.
A great feature of this game is the ability to load songs from my MP3 player or hard drive into Lips. So if your favourite songs are not on the game you can put them on yourself. This extends the life of the game greatly. It doesn't have the lyrics on screen but if you already know the song its fine, and if not you can get the lyrics from lyrics websites online yourself. The game manages to score you even on your MP3 songs. You can also download songs from xbox live.
Another fun feature is the time bomb or the fighters. In time bomb you have to sing well which fills up your cup with water and tilt the mic to pour the water on the bomb's fuse before it explodes. The fighter mode can get quite competitive. You must sing well to get into the spotlight, and eventually you can elbow the other singer off stage lol! There are other modes we have not tried yet.
On the downside I cannot figure out how to enter more than one account while playing the game, so all xbox achievements earned seem to be going to one person which doesn't seem fair!
Overall Lips is a fun game and the wireless flashy mics and options make it a great game.

Dissappointing, buy SingStar insteadSo Lips is rather disappointing:
Negatives
1. The game slows down when playing. Ridiculous bug.
2. You don't seem to be able to login under multiple Live accounts, meaning that all the achievements, even with different singers, go under the one Live account. I can't believe it was designed like this.
3. Other than the Jukebox there doesn't appear to be a multiplayer (more than 2) mode, or any other type of more complex game to play with the songs. Again, I can't believe it was designed like this, when this is a key feature and positive of SingStar.
4. The game is far too easy, and says off key tones are correct, as if they were on key. Also for rapping you just need to sing a constant note and you get the top score!
5. The ranking system seems daft, particularly when other singers cause your profile to move up the ranks. See 2. I guess.
6. One of my microphones doesn't have any lights that come on during the videos, whereas the other does. It works for everything else, and the green lights come on when I connect to the Xbox. Presumably it's broken.
7. The instrument shakers are pointless, distracting from the singing, and they just sound crap.
8. The movements you have to perform are irritating, and again just get in the way of the song.
Positives
1. The lights on the microphones are cute.
2. Wireless microphones are great.
3. There's a reasonable song choice with the game, for me at least.
4. Great if you just want to sing with yourself, and are tone deaf.
Summary: Don't bother and buy SingStar, although you're screwed if you don't have a PS2/3.*
*Although I sincerely hope I'm wrong with some or all of this.
