The obvious place to start would be with a "best of" album, and there are several available at a reasonable price, but then I spotted this collection which contains their first five albums in one package, so I thought I might as well go for the Full Monty and decide for myself which tracks are my favourites.

br /Good decision. The musical style of the Byrds evolved from album to album, and this lets you appreciate how they developed. There are hardly any weak tracks, but many classics. This is a set of albums I'll be returning to again and again, and it's fantastic value for money.

br /The only (tiny) criticism is that some of the bonus tracks are a bit of a waste of time. Presumably these have been added so that people who already own the albums are enticed to upgrade to CD format, but if you're new to the Byrds it's better to listen to the albums as orignally released. The later albums are also not as immediately accessible as the earlier, poppier, stuff, but I'm looking forward to letting them grow on me slowly.

The seminal first 5 albums from the band that really got me into music. I have already owned all of these in various formats but this packaging at this price was impossible to miss. The music is fresh and exciting still. The styles and sophistication develop with each album. In my opinion "Notorious" is one of the best 3 albums ever. They were there at the beginning of folk-rock, raga-rock and country-rock. No other band were so innovative. Highlights - "Chimes of Freedom", "Eight Miles High", "Draft Morning" "Lady Friend". An essential purchase.
